MIKE LIEN and THE ROURKE : A Brief History
In 2005, The Rourke presented the exhibition and book Mike Lien: Photographer of the late Mike Lien (1935 - 1977.) Mike was a gifted photojournalist whose abilities propelled him from The Fargo Forum to the New York Times’ Washington Bureau during the presidency of Richard M. Nixon. This exhibit led to the rediscovery of Mike by the Gaffaneys, the family of his birth father J.E. Gaffaney.
Robert Gaffaney, Mike’s nephew, started archiving, scanning, and processing his late uncle’s photographic legacy—the initial results comprised the 2010 exhibition and book Finding Michael.
Now, Robert’s work is complete: the archive of Mike’s photography is being donated to the Digital Horizons collection at North Dakota State University. We are proud to present this third exhibition in celebration of a journey’s end.
