Solo Exhibitions
Since George’s 1966 debut solo exhibit at Rourke Gallery, he’s presented forty-five solo exhibitions at The Rourke and its former affiliate, the Plains Art Museum. His other solo exhibition venues have included: The Fargo Gallery; M State, Fergus Falls; Jamestown Art Center; Second Crossing Gallery in Valley City; North Dakota State University; Bismarck Art and Galleries Association; Suzanne Kohn Gallery in Minneapolis; Mikkelson Gallery in Washington, DC.

George Pfeifer - 'America'

GEORGE PFEIFER was born in Fargo, North Dakota, in 1947. He lives in St. Paul, Minnesota, with his wife, Sharon. He’s been creating paintings, watercolors, drawings, and prints for six decades. When not in the studio, George worked in residential remodeling as a designer and project manager. He also restored his own 1883 home in the historic district of St. Paul.

George Pfeifer: A 60th Anniversary Retrospective celebrates the anniversary year of George’s first solo exhibition at Rourke Gallery in 1966, when he was 19 years old. It is on view in the Katherine Kilbourne Burgum and Gustavian Galleries, Archive & Reading Room, and the 2nd Level Hall at The Rourke Art Gallery + Museum. The exhibition includes 60 works spanning the artist’s career to date, with art from The Rourke’s Permanent Collections, art on loan from the Plains Art Museum and private collectors, and vintage and recent pieces available for purchase. George’s very earliest works show the influence of gallery founder James O’Rourke, but he soon found his own direction with the bold, hard-edge color field paintings and screen prints of his late teens and twenties. Through the 1970s, his work evolved toward an increasingly realistic style of landscape painting, with crisp details and vibrant color as a through line. The scale of George’s realistic works ranges from a mere two or three inches with his smallest watercolors to six feet or more with his oils on canvas.
