Artist Statement
Su Legatt's creative research into the personal associations with objects and /or places, how these relationships are formed and why they might fade. Through experimentation with a wide variety of photographic, installation, and mixed media techniques, her physical and aesthetic results alter and evolve, allowing for customization of each piece to accommodate the site, goals of the project, or community with which she is working. Often, this research requires the involvement of the community. Legatt believes that to truly understand the role an object or location plays in our lives, we must examine it from all angles. The sharing of these personal stories builds an intimate and uniquely delicate relationships and communities while strengthening out own individual memories, associations, and identities.
Legatt's photography, installation, and social practice work have been exhibited throughout the United States and abroad. She is involved with several workshop companies around the county and works closely with various groups in her region to strengthen the role of arts and culture in the community.
Biography
Growing up in rural Minnesota, Su Legatt developed a deep affinity for its land and people.
In 2003, she earned her BFA from Minnesota State University Moorhead before continuing on to earn her MFA from Utah State University in 2006. In the summers of 2005 and 2006, she had the great opportunity to work as an intern at Anderson Ranch Arts Center.
She went on to teach at several colleges and universities as well as several workshop companies around the United States. Currently, Legatt is involved with several workshop companies around the country. She serves on the Arts and Culture Commission in Moorhead, MN where she works closely with various groups in the area to strengthen the role of art and artists in the community.
