ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Deborahmae Broad was born in Newport News, Virginia in 1954 to a family of engineers. In 1977 she received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia, after graduating from Southern Seminary Junior College in Buena Vista, Virginia with an Equitation Degree. Though she thought about a career with horses, her father Richard Broad convinced her to go to graduate school to become a teacher. In 1980, Deborahmae received her Master of Fine Arts Degree in Printmaking from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee. She taught printmaking and drawing at the university level from 1981 through 2003 and then retired to be a full time artist. Horses are now central in her life again and have always been important in her work. All animals are important to Deborahmae.

In 1989 she began to learn wood engraving from a book in the library. Wood engraving on end grain maple and copper plate etchings with screen print colors are her main media today as she continues to learn. She shows her work in carefully selected juried art fairs across the United States.

Deborahmae and her husband, Byron, moved in 2018 from their farmstead near Hawley, Minnesota to a much larger farm near Twin Valley, Minnesota. They have more room for the animals who are so central in her life and work. Her studio, Prairie Press, is housed in a wonderful old barn they moved onto the property.
